Qualified Verification for Everyone

Global mobility is growing and people worldwide want access to all kinds of digital services. How do you register real people and keep out the frauds, fakers and foes? Qualified Trust Services may work well for EU citizens with electronic ID, but what about everyone else?

The identification challenge

There’s an obsession with big numbers in ID Verification (IDV). Companies target global coverage of all documents, and by some boasts there could be about 15,000 ID types, all chasing the false goal of 100% conversion. However, not all documents are created equal. Most ID types are still printed plastic with some optical and physical protections, but to be effective, verifiers need to know what security features they are looking for to detect forgery.

Manual Checks are history

Imagine if border crossings allowed any of the 15,000 “identity” documents to be used. Could you train enough people and spend enough time checking the authenticity of these documents? Would travellers put up with the queues? And would 100% conversion be the desired goal?

Only a machine could contain the vast knowledge required to compare a presented document with a reference model at speed and scale. But there’s a problem.

Defensive AI will always be at a disadvantage

The images of a document taken by a phone are just pixels. Pixels that can be changed at will or completely faked. Attackers get better because when they sneak past defences, they learn what works. The defenders won’t know what happened and can’t update their AI models until long after the fraudulent document was presented, and the resultant fraud happened. Defenders’ hands are also tied by regulations on AI bias which slow down model deployments. By then, the evidence will be gone because who wants the liability of protecting a database full of every document scan?

Deepfakes and Synthetic IDs

Attackers can change a documents’ face image to whatever they want, so they match the holder verification and pass through as an imposter. The only way to know if the holder of a photo ID resembles the real person is to cross check against an authoritative source – centralised biometric databases of everyone’s nightmares.

Of course, each border crossing point would need to connect to every countries’ biometric databases – which creates an infeasible problem of only allowing access to authorised parties and keeping the bad guys out of the system.

Unlike border crossing points where risk of forgery detection is high and consequences severe, there is little deterrent to attackers trying their luck on commercial services.

The solution in your hand

Thankfully this isn’t how international border crossings work and there’s a very good reason why our most important documents have biometric chips. As well as being fast, the document’s NFC chip is a decentralised authoritative source.

The data in a chip is cryptographically protected from manipulation. A single character or pixel change will be detected. The data is signed and traceable to the issuing authority by certificates. There are no centralised databases.

Most importantly, the holder's face image stored in the chip is high-resolution, full colour, so you know what the person presenting the document should look like. It’s the highest quality input to biometric matching.

That is why the European Entry/Exit system app relies on NFC chips to speed international travellers across the border – because it’s the only physical document check that works remotely on people’s phones.

With a chip-to-cloud secure session, it proves the original, authentic, untampered document is present with the holder there and then.

How do you put this to use?

Document chips are the original verifiable credentials, and you’ve probably already got one in your passport. So why not let your customers put them to good use? Inverid can get more than a billion worldwide travellers on the fast track to becoming new customers of qualified service at the highest level of trust.

Inverid's ReadID gets you to the highest levels of trust when it comes to identifying and re-identifying your customers from anywhere in the world.
