ReadID Explained

The ReadID verification process consists of two easy steps:

Scanning the Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) and capture Visual Inspection Zone (VIZ)
You first scan the MRZ in the identity document with the smartphone’s camera. This is necessary because the MRZ contains the password to access the chip, thus preventing unauthorized access.
Reading the NFC chip

In the second step, you hold the identity document to the back of the smartphone, allowing the chip to be read. ReadID reads the chip contents and verifies the authenticity. Pass to an optical solution if there is no chip available.

NFC technology to create the most reliable identity verification

Many passports, identity cards and other identity documents contain a contactless chip, which ReadID reads to verify the authenticity of these documents. The chip contains 100% reliable personal information about the holder, including the full name, date of birth and nationality.

In addition, it contains a high-resolution face image, suitable for face verification. All modern smartphones have NFC to read and verify this chip.

Worldwide Document Coverage

ReadID supports identity documents that have ICAO 9303-compliant chips. This includes passports, (depending on the country) national identity cards and residence cards. ICAO is the UN organization that standardizes passports. In addition, ReadID supports the Dutch electronic driver’s license.

ReadID works with identity documents from over 160 countries, including all countries from the EU, Canada, UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Which countries have ePassports?

Many countries have passports with a contactless (NFC) chip - also called ePassports or biometric passports -which means that those passports can be read with ReadID.

Capture the photo page with VIZ

An example flow that implements out NFC first vision and is part of ReadID now is NFC-with-VIZ-fallback. When used with an identity card it will take a good photo from the back page containing the MRZ.

Secure identity cards across Europe

From this August onwards all EU countries need to provide identity cards that are chipped and machine readable according to the ICAO 9303. A milestone for identity verification.
